Here’s what’s weird—I read that interview and remembered the Monroe quote as “best friend, surgeon” for some reason. When I couldn’t pick that up phonetically from the recording, I just assumed Clark altered it slightly for the rhythm (and songmeanings.com suggested the alternate phrasing*). Apparently, I just had the original quote wrong. Good catch!
* Does this mean I shouldn’t believe everything I read on songmeanings.com?
