Yes, there could be, particularly considering the specifically Christian notions of heaven and hell and direct references to Catholic school in “I Will Follow You Into the Dark.” Allen didn’t invent agnosticism or death obsessions, and, as far as I can tell, his perspectives on each don’t resemble Gibbard’s in any meaningful way (as far as this song is concerned, at least).
